New tools for construction firms to help manage waste
Post Date: 02 September 2010
This means that for users of SMARTWaste, the BRE web-based tool used to prepare and implement Site Waste Management Plans, it is now possible for them to transfer their waste data directly to the WRAP Waste to Landfill Reporting Portal.
Users will benefit by being able to monitor their individual progress against targets, run reports and benchmark themselves against competitors as they rise to the challenge of waste reduction.
The Waste to Landfill Reporting Portal is a free resource set up by WRAP (Waste & Resources Action Programme) for the benefit of signatories to the Construction Commitments: Halving Waste to Landfill voluntary agreement. It enables users to record and benchmark their progress in CD&E waste minimisation.
SMARTWaste users will now be able to select the projects they wish to transfer data from, the time period they wish to cover and the associated spend, and forward this information directly to the Waste to Landfill Reporting Portal. Data is transferred at either a ‘basic’, ‘intermediate’ or ‘detailed’ level, in just five simple steps. The Portal also features a new immediate data transfer function.
SMARTWaste Plan is a free tool that has been developed by BRE to help the building industry prepare, implement and review Site Waste Management Plans (SWMPs) in full compliance with the legal requirements.
It can also be used to meet the Code for Sustainable Homes, mandatory requirement for waste. Over 4,600 companies have registered to use SMARTWaste since its launch in June 2008. To date, SMARTWaste has measured over 5.8 million tonnes of waste.
WRAP launched Construction Commitments: Halving Waste to Landfill in October 2008. This voluntary agreement aims to help industry halve the amount of CD&E waste sent to landfill by half, by 2012. To date, 444 organisations have signed the agreement.
